SIKS course on Responsible AI

INTRODUCTION

On the Monday and Tuesday afternoons of 3, 4, 10 and 11 November 2025, the School for Information and Knowledge Systems (SIKS) is organising a course on “Responsible AI” in cooperation with the Hybrid Intelligence Centre. This 1-ECTS-course take place online over four afternoons. The course will be given in English and is part of the educational program for SIKS PhD candidates. It is a course with a broad focus, aimed at all SIKS PhD candidates regardless of the research area they are currently working on. Although this course is primarily intended for SIKS PhD candidates, other participants are not excluded. However, their admittance will be restricted and depends on the number of SIKS PhD candidates who wish to enroll.

AI technologies play an increasingly important part of our lives in many domains such as health and wellbeing, smart cities, social media, energy, art and culture, and robotics. Considering this pervasiveness and impact of AI on our society, it is more important than ever that AI researchers understand this context and are able translate this understanding into development of AI technologies and methods that meet the needs and opportunities of people and societies. In this course we address several dimensions of responsible and trustworthy AI, such as AI governance; bias; non-discrimination & fairness; privacy & data ethics and human-AI interaction. We approach these topics through an integrated treatment of technical, ethical, legal and societal aspects, as well as practical considerations. The course will include exercises to allow participants to reflect on responsibility aspects of their own and others’ research.
